Lasers vs LEDs for Hair Growth: Does the Light Source Matter?

Some devices use lasers, some LEDs, some both. We explain the real differences in coherence, spread and cost, and what it means for your scalp.

Brands argue about this more than researchers do. Here's what the two light sources actually are and why it matters less than coverage.

What's the difference?

  • Laser diodes emit coherent light: a narrow, focused beam at a single wavelength. Each diode treats a small, intense spot.
  • LEDs emit incoherent light that spreads out from the source. Each LED covers a wider, gentler patch of scalp.

Both can deliver red light at about 650 nm, the range studied for hair growth.

Does coherence matter?

Lasers were used in most early hair-growth trials, so they have the longer evidence base. Whether coherence itself adds benefit once light has scattered through skin is debated; some researchers argue the scattering largely removes the difference within the first millimetre of tissue. ADD CITATION What's not debated is that the total light reaching follicles — wavelength, power and coverage — drives results.

Why some devices combine both

A helmet like iRestore Professional uses lasers for intensity and LEDs to fill the gaps between them, giving more even coverage across the scalp for a lower cost per light source. Lasers-only caps such as Capillus and Kiierr rely on dense laser grids instead, which raises price.

What to take from this

  1. Don't dismiss LEDs; don't assume more lasers alone means better results.
  2. Compare total light sources and how evenly they cover the scalp.
  3. Check the device is FDA-cleared for androgenetic alopecia — see FDA-cleared vs FDA-approved.
